What is Detention

Transport June 20, 2025 What is Demurrage Demurrage is one of many accessorials (fees) in the drayage industry, adding more than $1bn in fines to shippers importing goods into the US.    What is Demurrage?    Generally speaking, the containers on a steamship are owned by that steamship line, and the shipper has an agreement in place for how long the containers can be used. But instead of a window of time, the SSL adopts specific milestones for the container’s journey.    For instance, once a container is taken off a vessel, the shipper has a set amount of time to get the container out of the port and onto the road. If the shipper (or the trucker selected by the shipper) fails to remove the container from the port, in the allotted time, the container will accrue a demurrage fee.    Who Pays Demurrage?   This can be more complicated than you’d expect. If a shipper has done everything correctly, and the trucker fails to pick up the container on time, that is the trucker’s fault, but the bill will be sent to the shipper (at which point the shipper may ask the trucker to reimburse them, or to pay the SSL directly).    But sometimes, it isn’t the trucker’s fault, in which case the shipper may be responsible for the cost (and may, or may not, try to pass the fee along to the trucker). Sometimes, it looks a lot like this:    (insert Spiderman meme with the 3 spideys pointing at each other)   How are demurrage fees calculated?   Demurrage fees accrue on a daily basis, once the grace period for picking up a container has expired. This can be a bit confusing, since some larger shipper will negotiate extra “free days” for their containers, while smaller companies are generally allowed to wait 4-5 days (depending on agreement, SSL, and other variables).    Demurrage fees typically increase over time, so a container that’s two days late might cost $100 per day, but that fee might increase to >$500 if it stays stuck for longer than a week.    Is Demurrage Fair?   Fairness can be difficult to achieve when it comes to demurrage. A shipper or trucker doesn’t want to spend extra money on a container, so they often feel as though these fees are an unfair penalty.    However, the SSLs can’t move goods (their source of income) when all of their containers are being used on land. These fees are meant to keep containers available for crossing the sea. ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy Google has been investing in AI for many years and bringing its benefits to individuals, businesses and communities. Can Shipping be Sustainable?

Transport July 23, 2025 Can shipping be sustainable? Sustainability has become an important topic when it comes to transportation. Reducing carbon footprints while optimizing supply chains is the main goal of many logistic companies to contribute to climate change and make a better world. It seems very challenging to achieve sustainability in the trucking industry, however it is possible. What is sustainable trucking?  Sustainable trucking is implementing green practices in the transportation of cargo. Trucks are known as one of the largest sources of carbon emissions in the industry of logistics, for that reason switching onto more eco-friendly ways to transport goods contributes to the reduction of this. Some ways to reduce the carbon footprint in logistics are:  Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV’s): investing on the purchase of zero emission vehicles contributes to the total reduction of carbon emissions. Fuel Efficiency: using less fuel to transport cargo. Route Optimization: minimizing unnecessary miles to reduce fuel consumption.  Importance of Sustainability in Trucking  The trucking industry is important to transport goods and contribute to the economy of the country, however it is responsible for a significant percentage of the carbon emissions. This increases the importance of sustainable practices within the industry, including:  Environmental Responsibility: reducing carbon emissions helps in the decrease of air pollution.  Cost Savings: investing on ZEV’s or fuel efficient alternatives may represent a high cost initially, but it will bring long-term cost benefits in the long run.  Challenges in Sustainable Trucking  Even implement sustainable solutions seems to be expensive, but easy, it comes with different challenges such as:  High Initial Investment : as mentioned above, becoming a sustainable trucking company represents paying a high initial cost. However, it would reduce costs in the future.  Infrastructure Gaps: switching to sustainable trucks requires a change in infrastructure. For example, if a company decided to switch to zero emission trucks, they would have to install chargers, or they would find challenges on the road since there are chargers just in some regions.  Range Limitations: Electric trucks may have shorter ranges, limiting their effectiveness.  Benefits of Sustainable Trucking  Transition to sustainable trucking can bring different benefits to the company such as:  Lower Operating Costs: reducing costs on fuel and maintenance by switching to electric trucks. Build Up Brand Reputation: becoming a greener company can improve the brand reputation from the customer’s perspective. Industry Leadership: sustainability in trucking is still new, becoming an eco-friendly company would position the brand as one of the first ones implementing new technologies.   Talon In Sustainable Trucking At Talon Logistics Inc. we understand the importance of sustainability in the transportation sector. We are committed to contributing to climate change by becoming greener. That’s why we have invested in zero emission vehicles with the goal of minimizing the environmental impact.  We are committed to make a real change by delivering our solutions by helping the planet become greener.  ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy Google has been investing in AI for many years and bringing its benefits to individuals, businesses and communities. What Is Intermodal Shipping?

Transport July 17, 2025 What is Intermodal Shipping? Intermodal freight is a modern logistics solution in charge of the transportation of the products and raw materials transported in a container using multiple modes of transportation. This method allows businesses to move goods from one place in an efficient and cost effective way.  Characteristics of Intermodal Freight  Containerization: Freight is transported in standardized containers, which makes transfers easier between transport modes.  Flexibility: Intermodal freight can transport different types of goods. Cost Efficiency:  optimizes costs by using the most economical mode to transport goods.  Sustainability: Reduces carbon footprint by utilizing fuel efficient modes like ZEV’s, ships or rail.  Types of Intermodal   There some types of intermodal used to transport goods, such as:  Rail – Road: Goods are transported by truck to train, and travel long distances to then be transported by another truck to its destination.  Rail – Water: Freight is moved via rail to a port and then it is loaded onto a ship to be transported to another port.  Truck – Water: Goods are transported by truck to a port, then loaded onto a ship to get to another port for then be transported by truck again for final delivery.  Truck- Air: Cargo is moved by truck to an airport, transported via airplane to get to another destination, and finally they are transported by another truck.  Pipeline Intermodal: Liquid and gas products are transported through pipelines, then being transported by road or rail transport to the final destination. Rail – Air Intermodal: Goods are transported by rail to an airport, then loaded onto an airplane and finally transported by rail again.  Intermodal brings different benefits to a company increasing the efficiency of it, some benefits are :    Improved Efficiency  Intermodal freight avoids headwinds, such as traffic, and helps to keep goods moving  Scalability This mode is used both in small and large businesses. Reduced Congestion  It alleviates the pressure on roads and networks. Enhanced Security  Since containers are sealed and tracked, it reduces the risk of loss or theft.  Challenges in Intermodal Freight  Like any other process, intermodal also comes with its challenges.  Infrastructure: Delays can be caused by poor installation of intermodal terminals or lack of connectivity between transportation modes.  Coordination Complexity: delays and scheduling issues can challenge the correct functioning of the operation.  Handling and Transfer Delays: transporting goods via different modes can bring challenges due to congestion at ports causing delays. ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy Google has been investing in AI for many years and bringing its benefits to individuals, businesses and communities. What is Demurrage

Image showing what demurrage can be like

Drayage

Development May 29, 2025 Drayage Drayage is a term that was firstly used back to the days when horses were used to move goods over short distances. Even though the way of transporting things has changed, the term remains to be used. Drayage is still used to describe the transportation of goods from the port to the warehouse or distribution center.  What is drayage? Drayage is a freight transportation that meets different kinds of needs to transport goods over short distances between the port and the distribution center. It is an important step in the supply chain because it helps with the smooth transition of goods from the port to another place.  Types of Drayage:  Depending on the type of service needed, different types of drayage can be offered.  Port drayage: is the most common type of drayage where containers are transported from the port to a short distance location.  Inter-carrier drayage: transportation of goods over a short distance between different carriers. It happens when shipment is changing hands between different transport companies.  Intra- carrier drayage: transportation of containers within the same carrier network. It happens when a container is being transported between different terminals that belong to the same carrier.  Door to door drayage: transports container from the transport hub to the final destination. This type of drayage is common in retail where they deliver the product directly to the end point. Key factors affecting drayage operations:  Even drayage is mostly known to be the transportation of goods from one place to another, it contributes to more things. Different key factors can influence the drayage operation.  Port congestion Port congestion is one of the biggest challenges in drayage because it can affect the smooth flow of the supply chain. Usually, when this happens it leads to delays causing the adding costs to the shipment, increasing the costs for companies.  Equipment Availability Equipment has to be available for the effectiveness in drayage.  A shortage of equipment  causes delays, disrupting the process.  Environmental Impact There are different trucks used for drayage the most common ones are diesel trucks which have a negative environmental impact since they contribute to air pollution. As a result, the environmental impact for drayage has become a big concern.  However, many logistic companies are implementing electric trucks to reduce the carbon footprint.  Cost and Pricing Cost varies depending on the distance traveled and the urgency of the shipment. Port congestion is a factor that can affect the cost and pricing variable.  The importance of drayage in Supply Chain:  Timeliness: drayage allows the smooth transportation of goods from one place to another, reducing the risk of delays.  Intermodal Transportation: drayage facilitates the intermodal transportation where containers are transported between different transportations. Such as from a  ship to train or a truck.  Cost Efficiency: if drayage operations are being effective and are well managed, they can reduce supply chain costs. By minimizing delays, businesses are able to reduce inventory holding costs and increase the speed of delivery.  Port efficiency: drayage helps moving containers from the port and leaving space for more. This allows the supply chain to keep moving smoothly by reducing bottlenecks. This allows ports to function efficiently.  Drayage is a key factor that allows goods to move effectively from one point to another over the world. It is one of the most important factors in the supply chain because it allows goods to be transferred between different modes of transport.  ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy ” />Quick Buy Google has been investing in AI for many years and bringing its benefits to individuals, businesses and communities. We’re now at a pivotal moment in our AI journey. Breakthroughs in generative AI are fundamentally changing how people interact with technology — and at Google, we’ve been responsibly developing large language models so we can safely bring them to our products. Today, we’re excited to share our early progress. Developers and businesses can now try new APIs and products that make it easy, safe and scalable to start building with Google’s best AI models through Google Cloud and a new prototyping environment called MakerSuite. And in Google Workspace, we’re introducing new features that help people harness the power of generative AI to create, connect and collaborate. “People worry that computers will get too smart and take over the world, but the real problem is that they’re too stupid and they’ve already taken over the world.” – Pedro Domingos More than 3 billion people already benefit from AI-powered features in Google Workspace, whether it’s using Smart Compose in Gmail or auto-generated summaries in Google Docs. Now, we’re excited to take the next step and bring a limited set of trusted testers a new set of features that makes the process of writing even easier. In Gmail and Google Docs, you can simply type in a topic you’d like to write about, and a draft will be instantly generated for you. So if you’re a manager onboarding a new employee, Workspace saves you the time and effort involved in writing that first welcome email.
